China installed two giant steel structures in a disputed area of the West Sea (Yellow Sea) and plans to place 10 more. China has claimed the structures are part of a private salmon farming operation in Shandong province. chosun.com/english/nation…

Beijing's claim that structures installed in Yellow Sea PMZ are "purely for aquaculture purposes" brings back memories of how it called those structures at Mischief Reef, within Philippine EEZ, "fishermen's shelters" in the 1990s. The rest is history. koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/2025-04-2…

China is employing again the familiar “talk and take ” tactics to South Korea, which they did to the Philippines with regard to the Mischief some years ago. n.news.naver.com/article/011/00…

ROK's 13th statement of concern on PRC's aggression and coercion against the Philippines since August 2023. The watered-down, cautious language without clear reference to China is consistent in ROK's statement.

It's the second time ROK issued a statement after the first one last year, albeit very brief and lacking substance, recognizing the Anniversary of the SCS Arbitral Award.

Highly likely scenario given the wide discrepancies between what China said and what it actually did to Mischief. My op-ed in Korean on this : n.news.naver.com/article/011/00…

South Korea may be shy, not straightforward, or even ambivalent, in words, but in reality it is playing an important role in making "significant contributions to the defense of the Philippines Armed Forces." Seoul-Manila defense cooperation is going "strength to strength."

ROK's 2nd statement of concern about SCS situation since new Prez Lee took office last June. A positive move, but it's yet fully clear whether Lee also commits to the pledges made by his predecessor Yoon. Hopefully more actions, not just statements, will follow suit to confirm.

Another statement of concern by the ROK Embassy in Manila. Third of its kind under the new Lee government since June 2025. Very brief and watered-down language with no reference to China.
