What a great Soil Horizons event it was! We enjoyed the performances by Sigrid Schmeisser, Miguel Teodoro and Kate Foster & Pantea Armanfar. Good discussion afterwards and very tasty drinks 🍷and food 🍽️ related to anthropogenic and technic soils 😋

Did you know? This massive block of vibrant blue azurite & green malachite is also known as the Singing Stone. Its nickname refers to high-pitched sounds it made when the humidity changed with the weather & seasons when it was first displayed at the Museum!

Introducing our #SoilMonoliths focused on #SoilErosion in our #SoilProfileCollection! Only 30 cm of soil is left on the eroded slope, fertile topsoil settled in the valley. This stark contrast shows how centuries of farming shaped these #soils! #SoilEducation #Agriculture ETH Zürich

This video illustrates the "levante" phenomenon on the Rock of Gibraltar. The "levante" is an east wind carrying moisture from the Mediterranean. When it encounters the rock's steep terrain, it rises, cools, and condenses, creating clouds, mist, and fog. 📹 Met Office

Slickensides are shear planes that develop under the pressure of swelling in the subsoil of soils rich in montmorillonite clays. Wonderful examples here 👇🏻

November babies: topaz is one of your birthstones. Weighing ~600 lbs (272 kg), this tremendous topaz is one of the largest single crystals of topaz in any museum in the world! It's just one example of how large crystals in pegmatites can grow.
