Was lucky to visit Kirkwall with work last week. In my hotel I heard a staff member summarise Orkney history brilliantly to an American couple. Told her I thought her summary was outstanding. She asked if I knew about UHI. She was a history and archaeology student of ours!

Last week I headed back to Thurso for my UHI graduation. Caithness was looking bonnie as ever. So grateful to all who made this PhD journey possible, especially my supervisory team & the local residents across the North Highlands who contributed so much to the research.

A privilege to be presiding officer at UHI Moray for this today. I hadn't prepared for just how emotional an experience it would be. Well done, students, and also guests and organisers for creating a first-rate event. #ThinkUHI

As an example, many thousands of students study within a prestigious, community-embedded university partnership, successor to a strong tradition of internationally-connected education in this part of the Highlands and Islands going back to the sixth century, at least. #ThinkUHI

The Highlands and Islands provides Scotland's closest geographical links to both the Republic of Ireland (via Islay) and Norway (via Shetland). A couple of reasons, from many, to celebrate the outstanding Gaelic current affairs programme that is #Eòrpa

Passing Cnoc Fyrish on the train while reading Mairi and Jim MacPherson's book on an eighteenth-century historian of the Gàidhealtachd, located firmly in the Highlands but also deeply connected to, and enmeshed in, worlds beyond.

Thanks Harry Gow Bakery for the outstanding cake, and to all who came along to the book launch in Dornoch Bookshop today for a pair of new Edinburgh University Press paperbacks focused on two different, yet, in some ways, similar, historical Highland scholars named James or Seumas.

Proposing we jettison 'Forgotten' for book titles and instead go with 'Has Failed To Gain A Foothold In The Popular Narrative.'
