Thomas Cullen and I published a review of best practices when designing a paleocommunity study. Re-analyzing our own datasets under different analytical and sampling protocols showed how small decisions can have big downstream consequences. x.com/KNanglu/status…

The Cabriéres Biota is an amazing new Ordovician-age lagerstätte, just discovered from the rocks of France, which I did art for. One of the highlights is an eoconchariid lobopodian, a group known for their plated sclerites, previously thought extinct by the end of the Cambrian.

Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn

I am fascinated by that little light colored "beard" on the little sabercat mummy. Since Homotherium had a flanged jaw giving it a Chad-esque chin, is it possible they grew long hair there to to further increase the visual display? Was this a bearded beast in adulthood?

Our final paper is out! 🦟🩸 We show that hematophagy evolved at least twice independently in dipterans and that four gene families linked to neuromodulation, immunity, development, and iron metabolism expanded independently in mosquitoes and sandflies. doi.org/10.1093/gbe/ev…
