UC San Francisco retreat! Taking home the incentives for connecting neuroscience to the field of machine learning and AI. Intrigued by the recent leap on Alzheimer’s disease from Prof. Kampmann's talk. Looking forward to visiting the lab. Thanks Alex Buckley for helping us out. #RikenUCSF

The beautiful retreat has been completed, and we came to visit the UCSF Neuroscience Graduate Program Mission Bay campus to have lab tours. Great facilities, no barriers among labs, and most importantly great minds finding out brain mechanisms and novel ways to treat brain disorders. #RikenUCSF

I’ve made this video as an intuition pump for the density of #synapses in the #brain. This volume ~ grain of sand, has >3.2 million synapses (orange cubes). Peeling them away leaves only inputs on 2 #neurons. Zooming in, we see the synapses localized to the dendritic spines. #b3d

Very excited to give a talk about my project in Optogenetics Gordon Research Conference associated GRS this weekend! I will talk and present a poster about our investigation of the functional input-output organization in the amygdala. Talk: 5.30-5.45pm (GMT+2), Sat July 20 grc.org/optogenetic-ap…

The great Senpai and informal career mentor of mine Kazumasa Z. Tanaka from OIST has shown his beautiful obsessions with the experience (context) vs place cell stories in the hippocampus at #OptoGRC2024!!👏 Optogenetics Gordon Research Conference

Are you a Japanese student interested in a postdoctoral fellowship in the US? The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has an exciting new fully-funded Global Science Scholars program to pair students who have received their undergraduate or doctoral degrees in Japan with US bioengineering

Check out a new lab paper from Mayumi Watanabe's thesis work showing how different subregions of medial prefrontal cortex differentially regulate extinction of aversive memories through projections to the locus-coeruleus-noradrenaline system: doi.org/10.1038/s41380…

I’m excited to share a new paper from the lab. The study led by Xiaowei Gu reveals how the mPFC encodes complex emotional memories, using an internal model to infer emotional associations and memories via projections to the amygdala rdcu.be/el19t nature.com/articles/s4158…

🚨New preprint alert🚨 We used closed-loop optogenetics to causally test the importance of inhibitory spike timing in network function and found that manipulating PV+ cell theta phase locking in the dentate gyrus can shift seizure susceptibility (both ways!)
