Devastating news from Birmingham City Council with colossal budget cuts incoming. Arts organisations including CBSO, B'ham REP Theatre, B'ham Royal Ballet & B'Ham Opera Company set to have 50% funding cut this year, then 100% (!) funding cut next year. Absolutely criminal. (🧵)

Depressing but not unexpected news from Brum. Represent a loss to the CBSO of about 5% of annual income, which (if not catastrophic) is still tough in the current climate, but also ends 105 years as a council-supported civic orchestra.

The city I call home is being turned into a cultural desert. You could point fingers locally BUT nationally the whole of the UK has been attacked by a government who will happily boast about The Arts but won’t pay for it or fund the education needed to support it!

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has received funding from Birmingham City Council for the past 104 years. This year it faces a 50% cut. Next year, a 100% cut. These are not normal measures, or normal times. The deepening crisis in local government demands action now.

We did 26 hours and 20 minutes 💪 👏 #LetHerMusicPlay started with Gabriella Di Laccio MBE ‘slightly crazy idea’ (as she describes it 😊) which resulted in one of the most magical, inspirational and historical moments in music. More soon and thank you for being part of this movement ❤️
