It’s looking fairly unlikely that we’ll have a white Christmas so we thought we’d look back to 2018 when the Beast from the East landed. It’s the double whammy of festiveness and a lovely old building in the snow. 😍

It's a little chilly today but it's definitely not cold enough to skate on a frozen canal. However as it's nearly Christmas it's definitely time to wear a snazzy red cape! 'Dutch snow scene with skaters' by Jan Griffier the Elder, c.1695.

Behold a festive fireplace. Although the stone fire surround looks like it could have been at the Hall for centuries, it’s (only) a 75 year old addition. Made in France or Italy in the 16th century it found its new home here in 1947.

Stop! There be blue sky and sunshine in York. Carry on.

It's time for us to get on out festive pyjamas and for the Hall to be put to bed for a well earned rest. We will close at 3.00pm on Sunday 22nd December and reopen on Monday 13th January 2025. We’re going to take a little break so we’ll see you in the New Year. Merry Christmas!

We are doing some cleaning and tidying this week before we reopen on Monday 13th January. In the past we would have used this bad boy to keep our records tidy. 👇 This is the evidence chest. Bought second hand in 1400 for 5 shillings. It held the archives for 500 years!

We've never ventured into the world of #adoorablethursday but we thought we'd start today. This is a teeny tiny cupboard in one of the Hall's anterooms. Check out the hinges on that. Phwoar.

Friday greetings from a frosty Merchant Adventurers’Hall!

It's Monday 13th January, it's 10.00am. It's time for the Hall and Merchants' Coffee House to reopen! We are here in 2025 for all your history and cake based needs.

Early birds do we have the breakfast of champions for you… A slice of 15th Century chapel mixed in with 17th century pews, a dollop of Victorian benefaction boards, a sprinkle of 21st Century chapel chairs. Topped with a King Charles II Armorial Bearing. Tasty!
