#PhotoFriday This photo of Edmund Street c 1870 was probably taken from the site of the Council House. The spire of Christchurch on the left and the roof of the Town Hall on the right help with bearings. Ref - Edmund Street Photo 41 LibraryofBirmingham Brumpic

Fabulous day yesterday in sunny Islington with two amazing presentations by Dr Sophie Kay and Martin McDowell on DNA and genealogy. The Federation is a superb organisation and I would urge all local and family history societies to join. ⁦BALH⁩ ⁦Family History Federation

Did you know that water used to be transported from the river to houses and street standpipes in wooden pipes? Usually joined up to lead stopcocks and taps. Elm was the tree of choice as it didn’t rot. All the English elms have gone now though. ⁦⁦BALH

You will all recall the naval battle of Flamborough Head in 1779 - the only time the Americans tried to invade us during the American War of Independence. John Paul Jones was Scottish by the way! The leased vessel Countess of Scarborough defended our northern shores. ⁦#battles
