The winner of the William P. Hobby Award for the best political science paper presented at a professional conference by a Rice University Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies student is Yui Nishimura for "Normative and Strategic Naming and Shaming in the UN Universal Periodic Review" presented at ISA #ISA2021

Thank you for the great experience last week! It was exciting to present my work in front of amazing scholars and I could receive many helpful comments from wonderful discussants. Looking forward to learning more from this workshop series!

Congratulations to Yui Nishimura on the successful defense of her dissertation prospectus: "How do Non-State Actors Change States? The Impact of Transnational Activism on Human Rights via International Institutions." Exciting research on the Universal Periodic Review to come!

Look out for this work by Yui Nishimura. Fascinating research concerning the effects of IGOs and NGOs on human rights!

Graduate student work, in particular, consistently stood out. 29 different presentations featured grad student authors. After reviewing all of them this week, I'm pleased to announce that co-winners of the APOSS Best Graduate Student Paper Award are: 5/10

(1) Haemin Jee for her paper "Credit for Compliance: How Institutional Proliferation Establishes Control in China" and (2) Yui Nishimura for her paper "Normative and Strategic Naming and Shaming in the UN Universal Periodic Review" 6/10

Both papers shine for their theoretical contributions, careful empirical work, and ambition. I'm grateful to the authors for sharing their work with the APOSS community. 7/10

Time flies -- now I am ABD. I can't tell how fortunate it is to receive constant feedback from my great advisors. Thank you, Ashley Leeds, Connor Huff, and @michtorresp, for helping me move forward with this project
