I know why we do it but discussing Stillfontein as though it's primarily an issue of xenophobia skips over that this is a very formal industry (companies breaking mining law to extract as much as possible from decommissioned mines) and there are also South Africans in the mine.

A second Marikana massacre unfolding with 78 dead so far. Police & government are responsible for trapping and willfully starving these miners underground. Absolute horror, needs to be on major news. Extractivism kills. #StilfonteinMassacre

Years of xenophobic rhetoric has so dehumanized people with different passports that it enabled South African Government to starve hundreds to death in a hole. #StilfonteinMassacre

This thread. Police beat their chests, after allowing this to happen in front of them for years, then tell us how effective this was. And our feckless, silent politicians, reminded yet again at how useless they have been at addressing poverty, violence, jobs, and immigration.

Our coordinator, Zaki Mamdoo, expresses our solidarity with the #OurLandWithoutOilCampaign & explains why we find the new law enacted by the DRC controversial. Communities on both sides of the border are already suffering from environmental destruction and loss of livelihoods.

#Goma is under siege, and the people of the #DRC are paying the price for a conflict driven by greed and exploitation. The battle for control over the country’s minerals: cobalt, coltan, gold etc has torn communities apart, fueled violence, and left over a million people in

We stand in solidarity with South African coastal communities resisting oil activities. We fully support The Green Connection and @NaturalJustice in their judicial review challenging TotalEnergies' oil drilling permits from Cape Town to the Cape of Agulhas coastline.

a sad paradox: because we have no real political representation, our artists become our spokespeople in mainstream institutions, but - often - their politics do not extend beyond their identity, and so we are left with symbolic representation in place of genuine leverage.
