In general this paper describes the nutrient sources (both for carbons and hydride) for fat synthesis in different tissues. Must read for lipogenesis aficionados! Congrats Zhaoyue Zhang Tara TeSlaa !!

Textbook says pentose phosphate pathway generates the reductive power for liver lipid synthesis, but it is not true. Check out this study led by Zhaoyue Zhang and Tara TeSlaa, where they identified the major substrate source to be serine catabolism. Congrats to all co-authors!

Another big piece of my postdoc work is out! We quantified the direct nutrient inputs to lipogenesis in lipogenic organs. We found a surprising role for serine catabolism in providing NADPH for lipogenesis in the liver! Thanks to my partner in crime on this project Zhaoyue Zhang

Another important piece of my thesis is OUT!🥳🥳🥳🥳We found liver and brown adipose tissue use different pathways to generate NADPH for lipogenesis. More surprisingly, liver utilized one-carbon metabolism. This discovery was made my me and my dearest collaborator Tara TeSlaa .
