Interesting paper on why people follow rules: Intrinsic respect for rules and social expectations are the most important motives for rule-following ("55–70% of participants conform to an arbitrary costly rule"). Extrinsic incentives and social preferences play only a minor role.

Until recently, the transmission of knowledge has been a total black box for economists. We are sure that there are positive spillovers, but we have never been able to show this — until now. Using cell phone data, we can show how chance meetings lead to patents. 1/

"It's the economy, stupid" Voters vote based on the state of economy. But there are many economic performance indicators. Which matter the most? This new paper shows voters react to growth, unemployment, inflation, & stock markets. But the inflation plays the biggest role.

Positive China Shock in Ethiopia: Chinese imports post 2001 caused industry-wide manufacturing employment to rise by ~5% because cheaper imported inputs (machines, chemicals, metal products, etc.) with no domestic substitutes increased firm productivity & capacity utilisation

this is a truly remarkable stat from the FT -- European countries see deaths spike way more than US cities with similar no of sunny days... why? the irrational hate of AC, sacrificing the poor and elderly on the altar of the climate gods. oh, and the learning of children, too.

Likely underappreciated stylised fact: In the past 300 years, countries started the Demographic Transition at apprx similar income levels, but over time, transitions have been getting FASTER & SHORTER, so that later transitions end at lower income levels than earlier transitions

For China's poverty reduction, income growth *within* agriculture was just as important as sectoral reallocation (moving from ag to non-ag). For Indonesia, agric income growth was far more important than sectoral reallocation, but income growth within non-ag also quite important
