Can confirm the heatwave has arrived - the water is 🔥 & the corals of Ningaloo Reef are stressed! Acropora, Montipora, Favites, Pocillopora, Stylophora, Seriatopora & some Porites are bleaching. Adult & young premature colonies are succumbing. #NetZero theconversation.com/a-marine-heatw…

This is Acropora tenuis in Exmouth Gulf, a renowned hotspot for resilient corals. Tenuis normally has a glorious pink-orange colouration. The white (bleached) branches are thousands of polyps starving & struggling to stay alive, the brown branches are dead, covered in sediment.

Coral bleaching is creeping into Coral Bay, Ningaloo, but the good news is that only a few species, and in some cases, just certain individuals are showing signs of stress. Encouragingly, the reef remains vibrant 🌈 , with plenty of healthy corals thriving! 🌊🐠🪸

#CurtinUniversity researchers have found widespread #coral bleaching at #NingalooReef and #Exmouth Gulf after a severe heatwave. Lead researcher A/Prof Zoe Richards said up to 90% of corals are bleached in some areas but hope remains for the future as corals have been observed spawning.
