The people of #Ukraine are defending their right to live. It’s that simple. They deserve all the support they can get to defend this right and to live and prosper as a sovereign nation living in peace.

My condolences to those who lost their loved ones, including children, in Russia’s horrible Palm Sunday attack on Ukraine’s civilians in Sumy. Actions speak louder than words. Russia’s talk of “peace” is empty as long as it continues its brutal aggression.

The world will miss Pope Frances’ wisdom, kindness and humility. His message on how to overcome the cleavages fragmenting our societies was clear: this can only be achieved through love. My deepest condolences to the millions of those whose hearts were touched by the Holy Father.
