Devon's finest marble. Found in such places as Exeter, Salisbury and Hereford Cathedrals and the Foreign Office in Whitehall. #Torbay #Devon #dronephotography

Sheffield Uni is threatening to abolish its Archaeology Dept. This means not just losing a distinguished centre of excellence, it’s part of a nationwide attack on the whole discipline- the county’s warden of its history and heritage. Please lobby hard against this cut.

Feeling privileged to be directing Exeter Archaeology excavations at Calstock Roman fort, Cornwall on #RomanFortThursday. Amazing finds including very rare depiction of a #Roman building on a stone disc. Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund London & South and assisted by staff from AC archaeology

Huge thanks The National Lottery Heritage Fund and @DevonHistEnv for funding our new Exeter Archaeology digital volunteering project Unlocking Landscapes which will use the power of 'citizen science' to map the archaeological landscapes of Devon and Cornwall using LiDAR! #digitalforheritage #lidar

This #RomanFortThursday I have the pleasure of welcoming the team from The Great British Dig and Strawberry Blond TV to help us continue Exeter Archaeology research into the 1st century auxilary fort at Calstock, Cornwall.

Occupying a wooded promontory, these earthworks appear to be a previously unrecorded hillfort in Devon. The northern face has a ditch and rampart c. 5m and 7m across respectively, but not all of the circuit is visible - was construction abandoned? #HillfortsWednesday

One of my favourite pots for #FindsFriday is this huge 11th/12th C jar excavated at Calstock, which provided secure dating for the lost medieval village that once surrounded the church. Manufactured and transported from the Blackdown Hills, at least 50 miles away.

Trying to wear out the kids this #HillfortsWednesday by making them storm the defences of Cadsonbury, Cornwall. Hats of to National Trust for all of the vegetation clearance, working towards removal of the site from the Historic England At Risk Register.

Two univallate hillforts, Blackbury and Boringdon Camps, in Devon with unusual geometric entrance earthworks, or barbicans, this #HillfortsWednesday. How many other examples of this are known in Britain? Answers please!

X-raying concreted lumps of ferrous metalwork can be a thankless task. But not this week. Mine and Naomi Payne's jaw dropped at the sight of this decorated object, flat, thin, and only 8cm long, from Calstock Roman fort. I want to believe it's a wing. Thoughts? #FindsFriday

Everything that made me get into archaeology encapsulated in a 1hr programme. Great, great fun, with proper decent people, professional production, oh, and a great last day discovery too! Making this was a tonic to the 30 months prior.

Our strengths at Exeter in digital investigation across all scales of archaeological subject matter, from macro to monumental continue to grow. Well done to all involved in securing this huge investment in our brilliant department @CarlyDigsIt being one!
