Many people beyond Snyder saw fascism coming. Many of them also correctly believed that to avert it would require more than just repeatedly shouting “fascism” on MSNBC while doubling down on support for genocide and the failed neoliberal status quo of the Democratic Party.

Recognizing the risk of impending fascism is very different from offering a vision for an effective political means to avert it. Snyder and several others were good at the former but profoundly lacking—or altogether absent—when it came to the latter.
