1/3 Today, an anecdote shared by an invited speaker at #NeurIPS2024 left many Chinese scholars, myself included, feeling uncomfortable. As a community, I believe we should take a moment to reflect on why such remarks in public discourse can be offensive and harmful.

What a treat to start the new year with a new paper from the lab, with @azayhara ! Hongyu_Chang and Wenbo Tang found that pupil dynamics in naturally sleeping mice uncover a microstructure of sleep that organizes different types of memory replay: nature.com/articles/s4158…

Awesome work! Congrats Brendan! It's amazing that cortex and colliculus can mediate similar yet distinct correction for tongue control. Seems both amazing and daunting for studying motor learning, because one would have to tease those apart when studying motor learning.

Many neuroscience students are steeped in an experiment-first style of thinking that leads to “random walk science.” Let’s not forget how theory can guide experiments towards deeper insights, writes Sam Gershman. thetransmitter.org/theoretical-ne…

I’m so excited to share our preprint on how brainstem neurons sense and integrate multiple body signals during food consumption. We imaged 1000s of neurons across the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) in behaving mice. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Congrats to Kim Reinhold, soon to launch her own group in the Eaton Peabody Labs, on this labor of love. Basically, she shows that the visually recipient zone of the striatum mediates outcome-dependent trial to trial updates of behavior. nature.com/articles/s4158…
