A resource vital to the Palawa people was #kelp. They would fashion the kelp into water carriers, using small sticks to mould the required shape to create a vessel capable of holding liquid. Emma Robertson articulates, “This ensured my people stayed healthy and hydrated."

And support for protecting the Great Southern Reef, where 95% of Australia's unique marine life resides? Also most people and marine industries? Heatwave currently off the scale (black) off Tasmania. Current heating plot from NOAA below (6 Mar 24).

New study exposes alarming vulnerabilities of the Tasmanian #kelp, Lessonia corrugata, as it faces unprecedented challenges due to rising ocean temperatures. Researchers identify a critical maximum limit of 22-23°C. #MarineHeatwaves 📸 Hunter Forbes 📜 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

Happy to report that my honours research is published! We found that Tassie giant kelp forests support similar fauna to forests without giant kelp. So they might offer redundancy, but maybe only since these forests are already so degraded #OpenAccess @ link.springer.com/article/10.100…

📑 #NewStudy by Jones et al. looks at the different patterns of animals active on tropical and temperate reefs over 24-hour cycles. Without explicitly sampling nocturnal processes, we may be missing up to half of the story of ecological interactions. 👀 buff.ly/3DbpM0C

Fast sinking krill poo moves carbon from the ocean’s surface to depths for long-term storage, better than krill swimming up and down. Scientists say krill ‘vertical migration’ makes a "surprisingly small" contribution to the carbon export highway antarctica.gov.au/news/2024/sink… 📷N Brown

As we start the year facing floods, extreme heat, and fires across the country, it’s also time to consider extreme events unfolding in a less visible but equally critical environment—underwater. Right now, a marine heatwave is underway off Western Australia. We know it’s

Australian marine ecosystems are renowned for their diversity. Yet many species remain undervalued & understudied, largely due to gaps in monitoring & conservation assessments. A new study led by Olivia Johnson highlights the scale of the problem. greatsouthernreef.com/hidden-losses

On my first dive in Tassie I noticed a nudibranch that seemed like it was out of place, like it should have been in Port Stephens. After spreading the word, this nudi started popping up across eastern Tassie. This is a really interesting range extension! link.springer.com/article/10.100…
