59 years ago today on December 23, 1964, Radio London came on air, arguably the most successful of the offshore pirates. Its Top 40 format, its slick jingles + DJs such as Kenny Everett, Tony Blackburn + John Peel changed the face of UK radio. Radio 1 and ILR eventually followed

RIP Wally Scott. For decades he was Billy Butler’s radio producer + co-host making Merseyside laugh. He and Elton Welsby also gave me my first radio break covering non-league footy 50 years ago in October 1974 in the opening week of Radio City where was Sports Editor. Thanks, Wal

25 years ago today on May 8,1999, Wigan Athletic played their last league match at Springfield Park, a 3-1 win over Chesterfield. The result took them into the Division 2 play-offs. So #wafc had to come back a week later to face a certain Manchester City. wiganathletic.com/news/2024/may/…

The funniest of men, the saddest of men. The great comedy actor Tony Hancock was #botd 100 years ago. A troubled genius who left a huge legacy of laughter after his early death from suicide at just 44. Here, in between scenes on The Punch & Judy Man at Elstree Studios in 1962

#OnThisDay in 1964, #ManxRadio - the first legal commercial station in Britain - began to broadcast! Behind the creation of 'Radio Manx' were years of discussions and negotiations between the #IsleOfMan and the UK. Files in our archive help to tell this fascinating story. 🇮🇲📻

51 years ago today on October 8,1973, licensed commercial radio began in the UK with the launch of LBC + its national news service IRN, ending the BBC’s radio monopoly. After 20 years in ILR + 30 at the Beeb I was proud to have a hand in the writing of this for the Golden Jubilee

This is heartbreaking. John was a pioneer on ILR, just short of 50 years since his warm, friendly, authoritative voice opened Radio Trent on July 3, 1975, having learnt his craft at UBN. His Vintage Chart show on Boom Radio was a great accompaniment to the Sunday roast. RIP John.
