Food enrichment: “Treat kabobs” can be offered to allow birds to obtain these food items outside of the food dish—encouraging a variety of natural behaviors including foraging, climbing, and tearing. #AAVEnrichmentTip

The Ostrich is native to Africa. They can run at speeds up to 45 mph and have legs powerful enough to kick predators away. Their eggs are the largest of any bird, weighing ~3 pounds each! There are two species of Ostrich - the common ostrich and the Somali Ostrich. #AAV

Grooming is a natural behavior of all birds. Preening is the act of straightening and cleaning a bird’s own feathers with the beak. Allopreening is when a bird helps groom another bird. Preening behavior in pet birds may especially be witnessed after a bath #AAVEnrichmentTip

The kiwi bird's bone anatomy is that unlike most birds, kiwis have more marrow-filled bones. Most birds have pneumatic bones to minimize weight and make flight easier. In contrast, pelicans have an additional unique anatomical feature; they possess extra pneumatic bones #aav

Some bird species engage in this fascinating behavior called "anting." During anting, birds pick up ants in their beaks and rub the ants on their feathers. Ants produce formic acid, which can help birds remove parasites and fungi from their feathers #anting #birdanting #aav

One method researchers use to study avian behavioral needs is operant preference assessments. During these studies, the bird is given access to multiple stimuli simultaneously and allowed to engage with the stimuli for a predetermined amount of time #AAVEnrichmentTip
