Out today in Cell: Not just bacteria, but also fungi are found in human tumors! This could force us to rethink what we know about the microbiome‘s role in cancer. doi.org/10.1016/j.cell…

Too many talented young scientists are turned away from academic careers because of low compensation and high cost of living. This problem is especially acute for underrepresented groups and disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.

Congrats to Niranjan Nagarajan, Cedric C.S. Tan, and Minghao Chia on a very important negative result! This may finally put the dubious "blood microbiome" hypothesis to bed. However, the evidence for transient bacteriemia (esp. F. nucleatum!) in healthy individuals is very intriguing!

Today in Nature Microbiology, we discuss the past, present, and future of the "cancer microbiome" -- especially timely in light of recent analyses by Abraham and Yuchen Ge, who offer a more rigorous path forward for understanding tumor microbiomes (and the lack thereof!).
