The Radical How: What would it take to run a mission-oriented government? My attempt to summarise an ace new report by @tomskitomski Andrew Greenway and the folks at Public Digital and Nesta medium.com/@jamestplunket… (Read the report - it's much better than my post!)

🛩️ New post! ArriveCan and the contractor conundrum 🛩️ The AG report says “relying on external resources” contributed to ArriveCan’s mismanagement. I think we rely on external resources to get around our onerous IT processes. Let's adapt, not retrench. federal-field-notes.ca/articles/2024-…

For those who are into this sort of thing - the boring magic that actually makes government work (or not) - this is really, really good.

I’m a fan of this idea - but rather than swap one arrangement of benefits (and therefore demographic traps) for another, could we not let people select their preferred mix of salary/pension/leave, say annually, and they can tweak depending on their circumstances?

Rather annoyingly, the British have some lessons for us on state capacity. Andrew Greenway and friend-of-the-pod Jennifer Pahlka broke down those insights on Statecraft. statecraft.pub/p/what-can-the…

About the state capacity report we published recently, Matthew Yglesias wrote today: "This is the one I wish everyone working in politics or advocacy professionally would read and the one you should bug your elected officials about." Thank you! niskanencenter.org/the-how-we-nee…

Really enjoyed reading "The How We Need Now" by Jennifer Pahlka and Andrew Greenway. Governments need to get better. A neat diagnosis of the failures of both the US and UK's bureaucracies to adjust to the changing world. The to-do list at the back is a fantastic prescription.
