Public service announcement for academics: the Chicago Manual of Style no longer recommends that authors cite a book's city of publication in their references. Or should that be the [...] Manual of Style? frontporchrepublic.com/2024/07/chicag…

Delighted to see Thomas Morris listed for his excellent second collection Open Up. Here’s my interview with him from last year. Thomas Morris: ‘I was hiding. I hid my stammer. I hid that we were poor. My characters can’t hide any more’ irishtimes.com/culture/books/…

Looking forward to being part of @juliemoiaussi's event, which centres on Article 45 of Bunreacht na hÉireann. Learn about some of the noble ideals that preceded the foundation of the State, and their legally unenforceable afterlives. Saturday 9 Nov, 11am at Galway City Museum.

Great to take part in @juliemoiaussi's 'Disappearing Acts' at the TULCA Art Festival in Galway City Museum. Illuminating to discuss Molly Twomey's poem 'Kinsale' and Julie's 'The Crossing Hour' alongside the Bunreacht's provisions on the common good.

Aberdeen are offering £1000 bursaries to Early Career Researchers in Irish and/or Scottish Studies to write/research there. I'd leap at this if I were an ECR - the Humanity Manse is as nice a place as its name suggests. abdn.ac.uk/riiss/news/237…

Thank you to the Provost of Trinity College Dublin for hosting the launch of Derek Mahon: A Retrospective. The perfect place for Michael Longley to return and reminisce about the early 1960s: "From Derek Mahon, more than anyone else, I learned what is meant by poetry." All the Olympians.

I just read that houses are burning on the street in Pacific Palisades where I lived as a child, and it's an eerie feeling to sit in Ireland wondering if your childhood home is on fire...

Condolences to the friends and family of Michael Longley. A great poet whose words will live (as he was fond of saying about others) as long as the language will live.

I've written a short piece on Michael Longley - less an obituary than an appreciation. booksirelandmagazine.com/as-long-as-the… I'm posting it with two of my favourite pictures of him: the brilliant portrait by Colin Davidson in National Gallery of Ireland , and with Seamus Heaney on the Hill of Tara in 2010.
