Anne Heggli presented her research about rain-on-snow events at #AGU23. She looked at a late 2022 storm in the #Sierras to illustrate how hourly data from the #SNOTEL network can be used to give real-time risk levels of flooding. bit.ly/hegglirainonsn… #WideOpenScience

#DRI’s Christine Albano presented her research at #AGU23 that shows increases in evaporative demand of between 6 and 12% across the country over the last 40 years. #WideOpenScience #DiscoverDRI

#DRI’s Mari Webb presented her doctoral dissertation work at #AGU23 looking at the potential impacts of a #megastorm of #AtmosphericRivers in the #TruckeeRiver watershed. Dubbed #ArkStorm 2.0, she found that flows would be larger than the largest historical flood peak on record.

The snow is this deep at UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab (1.8 m) Hopefully we can get double overhead. My back won't be happy but the research will be! I'll be digging snow pits all winter with @hydromet_man for Desert Research Institute

We have received 19.1" (48.5 cm) of #snow in the last day. Snowpack at the lab is now 102% of median to date. Conditions have already deteriorated this morning with gusty winds and significantly reduced visibility. The next 24 hours will be the heaviest portion of the storm.

From our friends at Desert Research Institute and University of Nevada, Reno! Calling all weather observers! Forecast offices need your help verifying where it is raining and snowing. Your observations will be made available in real-time to your local NWS office.
