In a recently accepted paper arxiv.org/abs/2301.07697, we describe a new catalogue of Faraday rotation measure values (aka an RM Grid) covering ~27% of the Northern sky with the LOFAR radio telescope. This is a valuable resource for the study of cosmic magnetic fields. 1/5

To produce the catalogue, we searched through ~1 million radio sources to find ~2500 precious Faraday rotation measures (RMs). Still, this is the largest number of extremely precise RM values found to date, and is part of Data Release 2 from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey. 2/5

Shane O'Sullivan (@aghatubrid) 's Twitter Profile Photo

This is the culmination of a huge amount of work over many years, from many people within the LOFAR Surveys and Magnetism teams. The catalogue (and associated data) can be downloaded from lofar-mksp.org/data/, along with some example code for reproducing our results. 3/5

Shane O'Sullivan (@aghatubrid) 's Twitter Profile Photo

This catalogue has already helped us make new discoveries on the properties of the magnetised cosmic web and the origin of cosmic magnetic fields, eg. see arxiv.org/abs/2210.06220 and arxiv.org/abs/2208.01336. 4/5

We also found 25 highly polarized pulsars, one of which was previously unknown arxiv.org/abs/2203.08331. More discoveries to come as we work towards an RM Grid for the whole northern sky. 5/5

Rounding out the afternoon at #lfm23 we're talking magnetism... Shane O'Sullivan speaking my language and demonstrating why finding polarised sources at low frequencies is so tough but so rewarding! Awesome work from the team behind the LoTSS RM Grid!
