A key monument in #Brampton is The Veteran, which stands in silent tribute to those who served and continue to serve our nation. This month, the City will replace the sculpture with a bronze replica that is expected to be installed on Nov 24. Learn more: ow.ly/X33W50LLqQL

A1 Definitely more effective. Grassroots agencies are closer to the people that public health officials were trying to convince to get tested and take the vaccine. There is too much mistrust of government and healthcare systems among certain groups for valid reasons. #HCLDR

A1 The healthcare system had not been treating racialized groups well prior to COVID. There were many complaints but the leaders were not listening. Then they expected people to willingly obey their commands to get tested and vaccinated. Didn’t happen. #hcdlr #CCHleaders

The same for us. We hosted a vaccine clinic for the BAC communities and had over 16,000 people vaccinated in 6 weeks. #hcldr

A1 In Peel Region, Peel Public Health realized that they best way to mobilize racialized communities was to listen to and work with leaders from these communities who were the gateways to reaching individuals and households considered “hard to reach”. #hcldr

A2 Practice humility and sensitivity. You need to develop and maintain relationships with people. You cannot expect to ignore and underserve people for decades and then ask them to trust you. #hcldr

A2 Treat people with dignity, especially when they are vulnerable. It is preposterous that you can only discuss one ailment when you go to doctors. How can a doctor really diagnose a problem when the patient can’t speak about the symptoms they have all at the same time? #HCLDR

A2 Leaders of community agencies formed the Anti-Black Racism & Systemic Discrimination Collective in Peel during COVID to hold government and institutions such as the school boards and police accountable. #hcldr

A3 It takes more than developing a DEI policy or training staff. If there is not a shift in the culture of the organization no amount of training or policies would make a difference. Systemic discrimination/racism in policies, practices and processes must be rooted out. #hcldr

A3 To embed diversity, equity, inclusion and racial justice in an organization, there must be a change in attitudes, thinking and behaviour at all levels of the organization – hard work and time consuming. Not everyone is willing to commit to the effort it takes. #hcldr

T4 Employee surveys can provide some measurement. But are employees truthful in completing these? Are people really feeling included? Can they challenge processes and speak out about inequities without being reprimanded? What about employee empathy surveys? #hcldr
