Myth: If a patient knows their name and date, they can’t be delirious. Fact: Delirium fluctuates, & even then, people with inattention can correctly answer simple orientation questions. Use onset/fluctuation, & altered alertness, & other sources to come to a diagnosis.

People with dementia attending the emergency department are at high risk of complications including delirium & falls. Keep family present if possible, provide frequent reassurance and explanation, & make sure that hydration & nutrition are maintained.
