Yesterday, I was laid off by Texas Tribune after nearly 9 years. New leadership got rid of its longest-tenured reporters and said they’ll no longer cover the criminal justice beat. No one on police, prisons, courts, the death penalty. In Texas. Here’s some of what we’ll lose:

We quite literally finished it in the space between getting the emails scheduling the meetings at which we’d be laid off and the actual meetings.

Lastly, it’s difficult to capture the joy & privilege of working w/my longtime editor David Pasztor who encouraged me to bring my whole self to my work & worked so hard to help me find my voice. I’m heartbroken to lose what we had. He made us all better. x.com/DavidPasztor/s…

I heard a story about a 100-year-old slaying of 3 Tejanos that possibly involved Texas Rangers that I couldn’t let go. The The Washington Post team helped me tell it in a way I never could’ve imagined in 2 languages. Don’t miss it. Today online, tmrw print! washingtonpost.com/nation/interac…

Crystal Mason became a public example when she was convicted of illegal voting. Six years later, she’s still waiting for relief. My first contribution to Texas Monthly, grateful for the opportunity: texasmonthly.com/news-politics/… #txlege

There is nothing more overdue & absolutely no one better to lead the Tribune. So proud of Matthew Watkins, a thoughtful journalist, natural leader & even greater friend. PS—Trib still owes us matching bean bag chairs. Maybe you can do something about that now that you're the boss.

In the aftermath of tragedy, Juan Gabriel's "Amor Eterno" consoled mourners in El Paso & Uvalde. This year, it earned a prestigious place in the National Recording Registry. How "Amor Eterno" eases us into grief & how it's become part of our audio heritage texasmonthly.com/arts-entertain…

Spending more time w/ Texas history these days, which is how I came across Porfirio Salinas. Though he's recognized by some as one of the earliest Mexican American painters from Texas, the artist whose work inspired LBJ remains unknown to too many: texashighways.com/culture/the-hi…
