Our CB guest blog post on the Cost of Mitigation paper published recently on NatureClimate. Hope to clarify how climate action is not just about 'costs' but brings lots of benefits too. @tavoni_massimo @AjayGambhir11 Toon Vandyck Celine Guivarch Joeri Rogelj valebos Grantham Institute Imperial

It is hot in Europe & will potentially be extremely hot. These temperatures would have been lower if it wasn't for our burning of fossil fuels. This also means fewer people would have died. Heatwaves are by far the deadliest extremes in Europe (this includes the UK!)wxrisk_sprectum

Where are global emissions heading and where should they be going to keep #globalwarming well below 2C and 1.5C? Today, UN Environment Programme released the 2022 #emissionsgap report. A look at the key messages but caution, not much good news ahead 🧵/1

Not only is Finnish forest carbon sink collapsing, the government counts on the sink to match fossil emissions for carbon neutrality 2035. This does not work. Climate models count on both forest sinks AND phase out of fossil fuels. No room for offsetting svenska.yle.fi/a/7-10024441?u…

The inclusion of the below table in the summary of the #IPCC #AR6 Synthesis report was heavily negotiated. It’s crucial in showing the diff in trajectories of CO2 & GHG *including 2035* numbers for the first time, hence the tough negotiations..
