After an intense month of data wrangling ending with product advancement meetings, there is nothing like a little local retail therapy with Emma Mace to calm the mind and soothe the soul. Thanks to the local knowledge and kindness of Dagmawit Tsegaye and Lealem T. Amenu

The most exciting part of the meeting for me was seeing the results from the analysis of MET data come together over four years of testing in multiple locations. Together we have a better understanding of GxE, greater accuracy in predictions and confidence in selection. 🌱🌾

Our last research station visit for this trip was to Ambo Agricultural Research Centre at 2000masl. We reviewed breeding facilities of the highland maize program. UQ pathologist Greg Platz was so excited to meet with EIAR scientists in the national centre for wheat rust screening

It is great to be back in Addis giving an intensive two weeks of training on linear mixed models for plant breeding Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research-EIAR we had fun linking Stats with Genetics today and are looking forward to delving into ASReml next week and working again with Clayton Forknall

The R package Rstats selectiongain is a wonderful tool to show the genetic gain you can achieve through adoption of advanced statistical technologies for crop breeding.

And so it begins… Day 1 of our course Linear mixed models for plant breeding kicked off today for Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research-EIAR supported by Gates Foundation Africa through the MERCI project. Breeding pipeline numbers are expanding in Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research-EIAR crop breeding programs and the teams had some robust discussions as we workshopped experimental design solutions for their yield trials and dedicated disease nurseries Gates Foundation Africa Clayton Forknall

So it ends…Day 12 as we complete the second course on Linear mixed models for plant breeding with a second group of EIAR breeders and pathologists. We have upskilled 50 team members in advanced statistics to improve genetic gain and had great discussions on trial design and GxE
