Many thanks to Alice on the left and Jackie on the right. A very big thank you to Allen Archaeology 💙 for your support.

Uncovering history - our very own Dr Sophie Thérèse Ambler (SophieThérèse Ambler) explains what actually happens on a dig 🏰 @lancasterhistor

Partners on this project include: Castle Studies Trust | Lowther Castle & Gardens | Centre for War and Diplomacy | Allen Archaeology 💙 | UCLan Arch & Anth | @UCLan

The excavation we funded Lowther Castle & Gardens led by SophieThérèse Ambler of Centre for War and Diplomacy , and carried out by Allen Archaeology 💙 and staff & students of @UCLan will be on Tuesday's show. They were hoping to find evidence that earthwork castle was part of late C11 Norman colonisation of Cumbria.

It's awesome to see the excavations, @ndhags, and the awesome Roman dodecahedron mentioned BBC News (UK). We are looking forward to this seasons investigations, too... 😇 bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

On Sunday 12 May season 2 of the medieval Lowther Castle & Gardens research project. In our latest blog SophieThérèse Ambler & Dr James Morris look at what they found in the first season, which we funded, and what they hope to find this year funded by us (dig) & CWAAS(geophys): castlestudiestrust.org/blog/2024/05/1…

A glorious dayto start #LowtherMedievalCastle 2024! Phase 2 uncovers more of Lowther's ringwork castle (potentially dating to the 1092 Norman conquest of Cumbria). We began with Dr James Morris UCLan Arch & Anth briefing student archaeologists on Lowther's medieval village. 1/2

The big job today is opening Trench 1, a quadrant of the ringwork castle interior, to uncover the medieval surface. Students are hard at work overseen by Louise Allen Archaeology 💙 & Dr James Morris. We'll be here weekdays till 31st May - visitors welcome! 2/2

Meanwhile on day 3 #LowtherMedievalCastle, Robert Evershed of Allen Archaeology 💙 has been conducting a geophysical survey north of the ringwork castle, assisted by UCLan Arch & Anth students in training. How do the results compare to the LiDAR? 2/2

Day 5 of our 2024 Castle Studies Trust excavation #LowtherMedievalCastle, and what's this? Could it be - possibly - evidence of a building within the ringwork castle interior? Dr James Morris shows the lines of a rectangular feature within the cobbled surface of Trench 6. 1/2

Meanwhile in Trench 7 #LowtherMedievalCastle, students UCLan Arch & Anth continue excavating the SE mound (site of a possible watchtower?). This yields an intriguing find (modelled by Dr James Morris): horse bones - an articulated fetlock. What's going on here? 2/2

In our latest blog SophieThérèse Ambler gives an update on how Dr James Morris, Allen Archaeology 💙 and team of UCLan Arch & Anth students have got on excavating #LowtherMedievalCastle over the past two weeks, including some datable finds... castlestudiestrust.org/blog/2024/06/0…

In week 4 #LowtherMedievalCastle, the team has moved to UCLan Arch & Anth labs to anaylse finds & piece together excavation records under guidance of Louise Allen Archaeology 💙 & Dr James Morris. Check out this 3D render of the ringwork castle! Backstory in the Castle Studies Trust blog below:

In our final dig diary for the Lowther ringwork castle excavation it's back to the labs. SophieThérèse Ambler looks at what the students of UCLan Arch & Anth under Dr James Morris have been doing to use their fieldwork in the field, revealing some more datable finds: castlestudiestrust.org/blog/2024/06/1…
