Can’t emphasize enough how unusual this is. For a mistrial to happen twice, with two different juries, about the behaviour of the same lawyer both times…. And now the defendants have re-elected to judge alone… There’s something very odd here.

DC playing up the “dumb hockey player” angle here. But these are grown men, with professional jobs where they dress + act accordingly. They show up to games in suits + regularly address the media. Showing up to court in a hoodie + refusing to answer Q’s is a deliberate tactic.

Days like this make it hard to be a lawyer and feel good about it. All support to EM. This system was never set up for victims. This is why people don’t come forward + why conviction rates are so low. We badly need reform. Grateful for the ongoing work of Federal Ombudsperson for Victims of Crime (Office) on this.

This is why Hockey Canada settled, they knew what evidence would be made available in discoveries because they had it since 2018. Is this why their “independent” third party now refuse to give complainants a copy of their complete file of their own evidence and personal info?!

In Canada, "not guilty" is not the same as "innocent." It means the Crown could not prove their case without reasonable doubt in a system that favours the defence. No matter the outcome in the Hockey Canada case, innocence has been lost for many participants and institutions.
