The tent count at the encampment on UW’s campus just dipped under 100. Yesterday afternoon there were approximately 110. Per the agreement reached with the administration on Friday, the liberated zone must be fully cleared by 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Things are almost completely cleared out now. There are three tents remaining, two by the east entrance and one on the south side near Savery.

Matthew Meinecke, a Seattle street preacher remains inside of this tent on the Quad. Prior to Monday's 3 p.m. disbandment deadline, he announced he intended to stay. UWPD has been unsuccessful so far in their attempts to get him to leave.

Meinecke's three demands of the university are: 1. “Apologize to the students and the Jewish community for harboring an unsafe and antisemitic environment” 2. “Protect the right to freedom of speech for all" 3. "Allow the use of amplified sound without a permit”

As always, there’s more work to be done but I want to take a moment to publicly recognize the incredible team of 25+ staff members at The Daily that made our coverage of the encampment possible over the past three weeks. I couldn’t be prouder to work with this team.

The past few weeks of stellar reporting could not have been done without everyone on this list and the support of so many others. This year has shown time and again the need for student journalism, and I’m so grateful that The Daily of the University of Washington will continue strong into the coming year.

On May 29, UW President Ana Mari Cauce responded to a student inquiry about specific examples of "vile and antisemitic" rhetoric. Of the five photos provided, two of them were identified as being from unrelated events in California (2019) and Florida (2021).

A photo of graffiti reading “Kill Jews” on a sidewalk was from Mid-Wilshire, California, in 2019. The photo was attached to a now-deleted tweet made by a Los Angeles chapter of the Anti-Defamation League.

The other misattributed photograph is from 2021 after the Florida Holocaust Museum was vandalized with antisemitic language in St. Petersburg.

The statement released on SUPER UW's Instagram this morning demands that Cauce retract her May 15 statement and issue a formal apology. University spokesperson Victor Balta said the university is not considering retracting the statement.

Balta and Cauce both said that the May 15 statement "was not based on any one or two images." Rather, it was based on "ample evidence of graffiti that reasonable people would consider to be antisemitic on campus."
