And finally, two weeks as a Visiting Academic SMU Yong Pung How School of Law working with Vincent Ooi. In particular, we will be hosting a conference on ESG(T) to explore the role of taxation in environmental, social + governance ๐. Also great to catch up with tax clinic alumnus Miguel Chui!

Itโs conference day! The SMU-Edinburgh ESGT conference organised by Vincent Ooi and I (with thanks to Vincent for such hard work) has begun ๐ฅณ. First panel kicked off by Vasiliki Koukoulioti who is talking about whether tax should be a fourth pillar of ESG.

And after lunch, Vincent Ooi discusses carbon pricing in Singapore, including the uncertainties and future of domestic carbon taxation ๐.

And it was great fun to present my own paper on whether we should use taxation to change behaviour too! ๐ค ๐ท Vasiliki Koukoulioti feat the head of Hans Gribnau in the background ๐

And today was our Early Career Workshop, providing a constructive space for tax and sustainability researchers to develop their ideas. Some fabulous presentations and conversations. Thanks to Vincent Ooi for all your work in making this an enjoyable 2 days.

For those going on about the need to cut taxes, it is well worth reiterating that we raise less tax than the average advanced economy. Thank you Institute for Fiscal Studies

๐ขA new article is out with David Massey in the British Tax Review! 'Shifting Sludge' discusses how changes in tax administration have shifted burdens to more marginalised taxpayers. We call for a sludge audit to be undertaken, and for greater support for taxpayers who need it.

Democracy and Tax Administration- BTR 2 , 2024 out in print now, edited by Stephen Daly with contributions from Hans Gribnau Adrian Sawyer Emer Hunt Angelina Mohr Dr Sara Closs-Davies Lynda Burkinshaw, Jane Frecknall-Hughes Amy Lawton David Massey plus Etienne Wong and Michael McGowan

Really delighted to receive a US-UK Fulbright Scholar Award to visit Villanova Law later this year ๐ฅณ. Iโll spend time in the Villanova Federal Tax Clinic to improve tax clinics in the UK and see the great impacts they have on access to justice. With thanks also to Edinburgh Law School.

Thanks so much for all the condolences for the loss of Isabelle. We're so grateful for offers of help but as we can't think straight at the moment,a colleague has kindly done a fundraiser page until we can function enough to know what we need.Thank you x justgiving.com/crowdfunding/eโฆ
