Really fascinating event tonight with Amy A. Hasinoff exploring ways in which #restorativejustice and #transformativejustice can be used to address online harms. Restorative approaches are so different to what content moderation is currently doing on online platforms.

The needs of those harmed are often overlooked in content moderation and are important in a restorative approach. Challenges of how to do this in systems where online platforms are out to make profit.

The interventions, mechanisms, and goals of content moderation and restorative approaches are often very different. Interesting to explore ways of changing content moderation to be more restorative.

Using restorative justice to achieve a particular goal (e.g. elicit an apology) or doing it without careful work can actually cause further harm - cautionary tale for online platforms hoping to use aspects of restorative approaches to gain a 'quick win' for their aims.

Lots of discussion about online communities and where to start with introducing restorative justice to moderators. Facebook groups or other volunteer-moderated smaller communities are potential areas to study. Share with Amy A. Hasinoff ideas of online communities she could contact!

Decentralization is cool, but to address online harm effectively, we'll need to learn from #TransformativeJustice and #RestorativeJustice. How can we scale that? Subsidiarity! Here's my article on this with Nathan Schneider noemamag.com/mastodon-isnt-…

As people migrate away from Twitter to Mastodon, “dealing with harm & conflict effectively within our own online communities will require a shift in mindset,” Nathan Schneider & Amy A. Hasinoff write noemamag.com/mastodon-isnt-…

Mastodon isn't a Twitter replacement, it is an opportunity for more truly democratic social media. noemamag.com/mastodon-isnt-… New article with Amy A. Hasinoff at Noema Magazine on our work in Social Media+Society

It is suggested by Amy A. Hasinoff and Nathan Schneider that future decentralized social networks must support community governance and hold moderators and administrators accountable. 🤝 We've broken down and analyzed the key points for the AKASHA Foundation here. 👇 forum.akasha.org/t/hasinoff-sch…

.Amy A. Hasinoff's research highlights the work of activists in making image-based sexual abuse illegal. However, she argues that the legal response to IBSA echoes the issues of prosecuting sexual violence, e.g. victim-blaming, w/ added jurisdiction issues online #PlatGovNet23 Platform Governance Research Network

For Amy A. Hasinoff, restorative justice in IBSA is an interesting approach bc it is about understanding and meeting the needs of those who've been harmed. This is particularly relevant when submitting reports to faceless platform governance systems. #PlatGovNet23 Platform Governance Research Network

How can we address the harm and repair it? According to Amy A. Hasinoff we need to transform the societies in which these harms take place other than focusing on merely removing harms. #PlatGovNet23 Platform Governance Research Network

How can policy push platforms to allow communities to participate & self-govern? Platform monopolies currently make self-governance impossible, as they are autocratic processes, says Amy A. Hasinoff. This is particularly important bc justice in IBSA isn't visible #PlatGov2023 Platform Governance Research Network

"With many teens engaging in some kind of sexual messaging ... the evidence suggests it’s time to move beyond a DARE-like response to sexting." In my latest for The Nation, we asked, "What does a good replacement for deviance & danger messaging look like?" thenation.com/article/societ…
