delighted by this Roman gem showing... a ring! A hare in the middle of the ring, grasshopper on an ear of wheat at the bottom, chariot rider above, helmeted head (Minerva?) and shield either side of the gem. The surrounding gold ring, alas, is more modern. id.smb.museum/object/679471

a gem expressing happy new year to #Commodus, accompanied by #Roman new year's gifts: a laurel leaf, a date, a fig and three #coins! The coins show a cult statue in a temple, Victory and the Commodus' portrait accompanied by this titles Pius and Felix. id.smb.museum/object/690778

occasionally in the Roman world women sponsored local coinage, as here on a coin of Eumenea, struck by a high priestess named Bassa, daughter of Kleon. The obverse of the coin shows a bust of Agrippina II and the reverse shows the goddess Cybele. rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/1/3151

In 1892 Gnecchi published an article in RIN where he made the observation that some hundreds of lead coins came out of the Tiber, many of which are Republican types. It's extraordinary, but as far as I can tell they were never published in full. The mind boggles as to purpose.

A cameo made of glass paste showing a laureate Augustus, the dotted border strongly suggests the model was a coin. britishmuseum.org/collection/obj…. Glass pastes were a cheaper way to produce products similar to gems, making them more available to a broader population.

This bronze with head of Roma and ROMA was thought a token. But an example found in the mining area of Castulo (RIN 2016, Martinez Chico) led to the suggestion it may be a locally produced quadrans. A token later used as small change? This piece is ikmk.smb.museum/object?id=1820…

Last day or two to submit an abstract to the ACANS Ancient Societies and Ancient Artefacts conference if you are so inclined! A great exchange on how we use material culture in the classroom awaits! :-)
