I'm so excited for the Planet Explore 2023 conference, convening this week in Washington, DC! I have the great honor of speaking with two extraordinary leaders in #climate and #conservation - Christiana Figueres and Enric Sala, about how we drive effective, collective action at scale!

.Planet produces a growing list of "Planetary Variables" - real-time, #geospatial indicators of critical phenomena around the world. Here's how one, our #soil moisture content indicator, illuminates drought and famine in the Horn of Africa: planet.com/pulse/using-pl…

This is VERY cool -- the backstory of how the The New York Times Visual Investigations team tracked the #Chinesespyballoon to its origin using Planet imagery and @Synthentaic #AI tools. #osint #digitaljournalism

My friend KW Low shows off “queryable California”, a demo combining Planet planetary variables data and #chatgpt / LLM #ai, developed with our AI for Good colleagues at Microsoft. A vision of what may come! :-) #planetexplore2023

Here's a bit more about Queryable California ... an early exploration of what the combination of real-time satellite imagery and #chatGPT-style LLMs might mean for making change on the Earth accessible and actionable! cc Juan M. Lavista Ferres and team! planet.com/pulse/queryabl…

Deeply moved by tonight’s discussion between the inestimable Tirana Hassan, César Muñoz, @msaez_torres, and Tanya Lokshina discussing their perspective from the front lines documenting and defending #humanrights around the world for Human Rights Watch.

Advances in attribution science show that #climate change made the drought in the Horn of Africa 100x more likely. #security, #climate and #humanrights are inextricably linked - but our global funding, governance and accountability mechanisms are not.

Here's a policy idea I think you'll be hearing a LOT more of in the coming years: the proposed use of public-private #insurance programs to offer social protection to #climate vulnerable populations, as negotiations over financing loss and damage continue to play out.

Companies adopting #AI need to "move slowly and not break things" - from a nice Fast Company writeup, featuring my Planet colleague Kevin Weil 🇺🇸, and our collaborations with Microsoft's #AIforGood team and @Synthetaic: fastcompany.com/90888603/appli…

The anthropologist Wade Davis reflects on the spread of the term "#indigenous", and whether, in current usage, it hides more than it reveals: theglobeandmail.com/opinion/articl… Genuinely curious what people - particularly Indigenous people - make of this argument.

Our government once (recently) separated migrant families at the border and kept kids in cages. The Greeks now throws them back into the sea. The hearts of men do not survive undertaking such acts of depravity untouched. Guilt is a slow poison. There will be a reckoning.

Glad to be back in Geneva to give a plenary talk tomorow on "#AI in a Time of Planetary Transitions" at the AI for Good 🇺🇳 #AIforGood #ITUaiSummit. Int’l Telecommunication Union/United Nations has organized a remarkable group of leaders, at a critical moment for setting #AI's future direction. aiforgood.itu.int/summit23/

ICYMI Nathaniel Raymond was on Al Jazeera English Podcasts "The Take" discussing how #ConflictObservatory partner Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL) at YSPH is actively monitoring the conflict in #Sudan to report atrocities against civilians, infrastructure, & culture. Hear why research is vital to bringing light to the conflict.

A welcome respite from a season of difficult #climate news. Climate is often understood to be too- long- term a problem for our “presentist” institutions to address. Here, we gave the future a voice, and made the present institutions listen!
