The Chinese Communist Party's threats to restrict visas for U.S. citizens is the latest example of Beijing’s refusal to accept responsibility for breaking its commitment to the people of Hong Kong. We will not be deterred from taking action to respond.

"He told me that at the application of the National Security Law, Britain would act. That law comes into force tomorrow. He must not waver." Excellent question from Lisa Nandy MP, and good to see Dominic Raab restate Britain's commitments. Vital UK take action now.

The law applies to any acts undertaken in HK, any acts undertaken by a HK permanent resident outside HK, & interestingly also is said to have extraterritorial power, applying to any non-HK permanent resident outside HK but carrying out one of the defined crimes directed at HK.

This law is a monstrosity. If you ever wanted to rapidly impose a harsher form of authoritarian rule over a country (or city), it provides all the blunt and pointed tools favoured by dictators today. It is manifestly a weapon against democracy. transitjam.com/2020/06/30/nat

#BREAKING: A man was arrested for holding a #HKIndependence flag in #CausewayBay, Hong Kong, violating the #NationalSecurityLaw. This is the first arrest made since the law has come into force.

This banner neatly expresses why “lifeboat” “airlift” and other escape policies to help #HongKong are welcome, but inadequate. It reads: “Actually, we really f*cking like Hong Kong” Pls note Dominic Raab Lisa Nandy MP

Under the new national security law, Hongkongers arrested in "complicated situations" will be tried in mainland courts, under Chinese law, where the maximum sentence is death penalty. Hong Kong’s justice minister said she would not interfere in sentencing. news.rthk.hk/rthk/en/compon

Extremely disturbing news from #HongKong - just been announced that under the new law there can be: - search without warrant - prevention of 'suspects' leaving HK - freezing of assets - communication interception hhttps://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/202007/06/P2020070600748.htm

We'd announce that we're stopping too, but we never started turning over user data to HK police. Also, we don't have user data to turn over.

Britain must lead the world in coordinating a three-pronged global response to Beijing’s new national security bill which includes targeted sanctions, diplomatic efforts and a humanitarian package for Hong Kongers hoping to flee, Benedict Rogers writes. buff.ly/3iLg7ip

I really hope that #Germany’s government will suspend their extradition agreements with #HongKong ASAP. The human rights situation there has escalated way too much. No more business as usual GermanForeignOffice Stefan Kornelius
