I explained the case for why AI can't be conscious in this convo with Alex Murshak. Most of the leading theories of consciousness are incompatible with physics. They violate locality in time and space, and require extrinsic computation that must solve vast NP-complete problems.

Sometimes in science, we select our methodology by tradition, not logic. A comment may sound rigorous—yet be rooted in ritual. Clarity doesn’t come from complexity. It begins when we ask: "How can I, based on logic, test this in the least demanding way?" I believe in simplicity.

Aneil Aneil Mallavarapu gave an excellent talk two nights ago at the Portal on the impossibility of conscious AI, nonlocal consciousness, a shift from classical process theories to state theories, and the new paradigm. More people should hear it... podcasts/venues.....
