"Patterns of whiteness in OT are alive and well....we need to make space for people who don't think the same way" -Angie Phenix #CAOT2023

"White supremacy is the well-believed myth of the inherent superiority of white people, white culture, white ways of being and doing...It’s providing care through a white-dominant lens, using white-normed assessments, and white-standard interventions." #DisruptOT #CAOT2023

I often get asked the question, “why is everyone so sick on reserves?” I turn it around. I ask “why are people healthier in other areas?” This shifts the conversation from “why are they broken” to “why is the system broken?”

"In none of the writers who make up the usual canon of modern social theory is there a discussion of race as central to the social structures of modernity. We trace this absence to a failure to account for the centrality of colonialism & empire within the modern world.

“Polycrisis” is a word I’m seeing pop up lots this year, “the simultaneous occurrence of several catastrophic events.” In the midst of Polycrisis, we must ensure the survivability of core social programs like healthcare in 🇨🇦. Do you agree or disagree? cascadeinstitute.org/polycrisis/

I’ve decided to stop working for Colonial systems. It’s false to think you can “change things from the inside,” because they are founded in violence/erasure of Indigenous Peoples. Participating in them is soul sucking. I will only uplift & rebuild our own systems, with allies 👊🏽

📢📢New paper in the Open Journal of OT from some Dalhousie OT faculty: "Openness to Critique is Essential". Claims of universality in the OT profession must end. Indigenous folks must be supported in advocacy efforts for Indigenous created tools & models. scholarworks.wmich.edu/cgi/viewconten…

I am incredibly honoured to work with amazing Indigenous OTs across the country. As we continue to advance to work of the Indigenous OT Collective of Canada - we hope to enact meaningful change in education, research, and clinical practice to better support Indigenous peoples!
