A 4k ultra HD version of Oliver Stone's Alexander is being released in the superior Final Cut with the best bits restored (cut in honour of the sensibilities of 2004 US audiences in the cinema version). More on Bagoas, though it gets him a little wrong. hd-report.com/2025/06/27/oli…

Maybe my message that the Alexander-Helios statue at the peak of the Pharos lighthouse in Alexandria held out its light is finally getting through, since this little tetradrachm from Alexandria just made £2000: struck in the last year of the coinage (295-296AD) under Galerius

A multi-cultural version of Alexander's Journey has been performed in Melbourne, Australia. Alexander himself was among the most multi-cultural people in antiquity. Apart from his donning Persian clothing, his Last Plans specified cosmopolitan cities founded by moving populations

Unusually, two stars went nova in the Southern Skies in June: on June 12 in the constellation Lupus and on June 25 in Vela. Both became visible to the naked eye. Astrologically, they portend sudden changes. The 12-day war began on June 13 and ended on June 24✨😃

There is to be a Professor of Alexander the Great Studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. They want a rigorous approach. It'd be nice if they could get some rigor applied to the isotopic analysis of the bones from the Amphipolis Tomb that probably belong to

I found 3 more specimens of the Alexandria Pharos Lighthouse crowning statue of Helios tetradrachm struck under Galerius 294-295AD in the RPC database. Two of them have (poor) photos. They all show smoke emerging from the globe. Maybe all struck with the same die.🤔

A nice little (8g, 22mm) Antinous coin from Sala is up for auction by E-Rex Privatus. Has a clear profile bust of the hero and he is depicted as Dionysus with grapes and a kantheros on the reverse. The inscription is legible too, so the start of €400 is come-and-get-me. 🛒

Two tetradrachms struck in Alexandria 295-6AD with similar profile busts of Helios on their reverses, the first in slightly better condition but less rare being struck for the tetrarch Galerius instead of Constantius. The 1st £2000 last week, the 2nd a tenth of that today🤔

A nice Pharos & ship tetradrachm struck in Alexandria under Commodus just sold for €525. That's cheap since it is well-centred & most of the pertinent details, such as the crowning statue of Helios can just about be discerned. You can even see the phalluses on the Tritons🍆

Here's a challenge: an Antinous medallion up for auction weighing 14.9g and 30mm diameter. But where is it from and which particular type? Started at €5 & one bid already. The auction house is guessing Tarsus. Countermarked with a Δ (4 drachms?)🤷‍♂️

#EpigraphyTuesday takes into the #CapitolineMuseums to find this #tombstone of a #Praetorian, found in the early C18 just outside Porta Pinciana. The #PraetorianGuard was, in the second half of the C1 CE, a good economic proposition, enough to tempt a veteran out of retirement.
