As 3 major democracies elect new governments in the coming months, a moment of silence for all us. Climate and adaptation agenda missing everywhere, in the most historic year for self-governance.

Stifling free press is an instrument of colonisers. Or dictators. The more things change, the more they remain the same. #archives

How long will funders (Indian CSR) ping-pong between playing safe & talking big on platforms, while trying to solve the climate crisis through planting trees? I see their limitations (market, politics, etc), but all the plantations in the world will not plug systemic leaks.

This is absolutely incredible news if you're even remotely interested in South Asian or Sri Lankan literature. Vajra Chandrasekera's debut novel, the Saint of Bright Doors has won the Nebula. Not only is this a first for the region, it's one of the cleverest books I've read in the past year.

Graeber on bureaucracy and its enemies: "[By] labeling a new regulatory measure 'deregulation' you can frame it in the public mind as a way to reduce bureaucracy and set individual initiative free, even if the result is a fivefold increase in the number of forms to be filled in"

Appallingly low preparedness from civic bodies in dealing with heatstrokes. A reminder, once again, that no government in the country has paid any attention to mitigation strategies against impending climate change. scroll.in/article/106940…

Never a dull moment in South Asia. Political upheaval in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and now Bangladesh. Wonder why India remains a novelty in peaceful transition of power in the region.

A worrying and rather unique trend of below-replacement level fertility in a poor country. This portends a huge burden of care on the coming generations.

A word to all the good folks promoting participatory democracy who work in the Global North (and many in Global South as well). 🧵Democracy is not, I repeat NOT, a Western invention which allows you to come to this in some quasi-Huntingtonian framework where you are going to

Gyanpith to Vinod Kumar Shukl gives me the opportunity to share one of my favorite poems of his: दूर से अपना घर is even more special in these times, when being a migrant -- away from home -- carries so many unrealised challenges. hindwi.org/kavita/door-se…
