This is a cool story and I’m so glad it’s out. Congratulations to this team and the many “Orphan Labbies” who observed, wondered about, and studied these initially mysterious crusts over the years.

Great news and views article out today by Jesse McNichol on our recent nat micro paper on chemoautotrophy at deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Great summary and agree that deep-sea research is hard and important and that interdisciplinary teams are key. Amanda Achberger nature.com/articles/s4156…

Thank you to Pierre Deep Sea for visiting us in Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability today and delivering a fantastic seminar on everything from seeps and vents to meaty worms and gLM. we are all just visitors on “planet ocean” 🔵

Glad to see this in The New York Times and glad this scientist found a solution that works for her. The dilemma is real, and unfortunately taking kids into the field is not an option for many of us. We need to keep thinking creatively about how to support (and retain) moms in the field.

it's preprint day! happy to share my first piece of postdoc work as well as my first in the marine space, this time, exploring the biology of bacteria and archaea fixing carbon with rubisco in the deep water column

Congrats Dr. @amanda_semler, expert in methane seeps! 🫧 Hooding Amanda was a big deal for me - she’s my 4th phd student to graduate but the 1st I got to hood in person (thx to covid and fieldwork). Keep an eye out for two more pubs from her awesome dissertation, almost out 😉

cyanobacteria can have multiple distinct forms of rubisco! check out our new preprint to learn about the unusual carbon fixation machinery of an low O2 prochlorococcus and what we think it might mean for physiology and ecosystem biogeochem
