Federally funded academic research is the innovation engine of the US economy. Reform is welcome. Destruction will have long term consequences.

METR published and promoted this paper with a provocative, misleading headline and summary and body. They buried the fact that the single experienced developer DID have significant gains, contradicting the headline. I hope that the authors withdraw this paper or at the very least

NEW: The NIH will soon disinvite dozens of scientists about to take roles on panels that make final decisions on grant funding. NIH staff were told to select others aligned with the Trump administration and to expect placements by political appointees. nature.com/articles/d4158…

there's this phenomenon happening with AI coding tools. i'm calling it "subscription fog." you have users bragging about getting $3k of inference for $200/month. then suddenly things "feel" off. when the same entity controls both: 1. the inference supply 2. the harness

Folks, this is the opposite of “taking politics out of science”. This is just one level below persecuting scientists for their political beliefs and undermines their free speech! These councils make critical funding decisions that should be free from political bias.

I thought we were past this kind of stuff but that would require engineers who apply algorithm X to science to learn about science-ing. I remember a bunch of work like this 10+ years ago from biomedical engineers in schools of medicine. We could afford to have less of this flavor

Terrible news that Trump and Texas GOP are going to try to gerrymander more seats into TX ahead of the 2026 midterms. Gerrymandering is a bipartisan scourge, and Democrats will respond in kind in California — further entrenching our broken electoral system for generations.

Why do diffusion models use the same GNN structure across denoising? Our #ICML paper presents Noise-Conditioned Graph Networks, a class of GNNs that adapts the graph structure to the noise level of the generative process. 📄arxiv.org/abs/2507.09391 💻tinyurl.com/ncgn-code 🧵

Very excited to share our new work on gastruloids by the incredible Cat Triandafillou! We mapped gene expression across 26 individual gastruloids at single-cell resolution and discovered some pretty amazing patterns about how these "mini-embryos" organize themselves.

39% drop in apartment sales in Russia compared to last year. Just another sign to add to the several hundred others of an economy struggling to keep its head above water in the midst of Putin’s war.

It was great to be part of this statement. I wholeheartedly agree. It is a wild lucky coincidence that models often express dangerous intentions aloud, and it would be foolish to waste this opportunity. It is crucial to keep chain of thought monitorable as long as possible

Not studying animal models would halt basic neuroscience. We don’t have good AI models of animal brains to study and we can’t study human brains at single spike single neuron resolution. Studying the brain using fMRI is like studying the economy from a telescope on the moon.

Incredible, Vinay Prasad MD MPH and Sensible Medicine have repeatedly argued that public health decisions MUST be backed by rigorous clinical trial data with practical endpoints, and Makary is just going with family narratives.

Vinay Prasad MD MPH Sensible Medicine It also looks like Makary is violating the White House executive order on Gold Standard Science by not communicating the uncertainty (including propagation of uncertainty) of his evidence and assumptions. whitehouse.gov/presidential-a…

One of consequences of overhyping promising but underdeveloped approaches (AI for bio, organoids etc) is that sometimes funders make utterly daft decisions based on hype vs reality. Case in point. Let's hope those virtual cell & organoid replacements of animal models deliver.
