China Development Forum 2023 speaker list. Traditionally high level global CEOs show up w. high level Party's econ personnel. Lack of American CEO presence is unsurprising and significant contrast from 2019. European/German presence strong. finance.sina.com.cn/china/2023-03-…

In Sichuan, I had the most somber, most emotionally draining day of my trip - and it happened by accident. That was the day I visited the areas obliterated by the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake. Long thread, with some heavy content ahead. 🧵

There is a lot of great data in here describing the continued march of Chinese manufacturing which if anything has accelerated since 2020 Brad frames it in the context of global savings/investment imbalances but I think it is also important to examine it from another angle ...

Glad to see the "social transfers in kind" adjustment finally get some mainstream coverage. Brings much-needed clarity and accuracy to the ongoing debate about HH income, consumption and savings and perceived imbalances.

I have thought much about innovation and China over the years. Here I talked about it in the context of Sid Meier's Civilization and its research trees. I wrote this a while back but it is still relevant today. readwriteinvest.com/p/will-china-b…

Glenn here with a breakdown of one of my favorite tech topics. So much of China’s telecom leadership has been the result of the transformation of management dynamics in North American telecoms in the 90s and 2000s and the erosion of R&D that went with it.

The bulk of industrial policies in China and the United States today are not beggar-thy-neighbor. In fact, many should be considered enrich-thy-neighbor, notes Dani Rodrik. bit.ly/4eC48QJ

I’m headed to Huawei’s Mate 70 launch event in Shenzhen (yes, Shenzhen Metro has business class). This phone/chip/OS/event is a really big deal for Chinese tech, and has big implications for US-China relations. Here’s some background.
