Can we use artificial intelligence to detect new eruptions in Antarctica? Yes, according to this new article from Dye and Mora. They use a convolutional neural network to detect 263 eruptions at Mt Erebus from infrared images. Read for yourself here: researchgate.net/publication/33…

Evidence of recent Antarctic volcanism is in marine sediments as well! Di Roberto et al show that a cryptotephra from their core in the Ross Sea is from a 1252 ± 2 CE eruption of Mt Rittman, also found in a number of nearby ice cores. doi.org/10.1038/s41598… #antvolc

Not all inhabitants of Antarctica love the cold. Schultz et al. map the genome of a heat-loving (50°C/120°F!) bacteria living on antarctic volcano Deception island. This bacteria might have uses in bioremediation of hydrocarbons. Quite a find! mra.asm.org/content/8/40/e… #antvolc
