A little-known provision of the Privacy Act makes it illegal for many companies in Australia to buy or exchange consumers’ personal data for profiling or targeting purposes. It’s almost never enforced. Dr Katharine Kemp argues Office of the Australian Information Commissioner should take action. privacy.org.au/2022/09/21/thi…

We have been contacted by Optus and made aware of their data breach. Following any data breach, individuals should look out for suspicious or unexpected activity on their personal accounts or devices. 1/2

The situation around Optus’ data breach (don’t call it a “hack”, the API was open to the internet) just goes to show why #privacy is a #natsec issue. The solution isn’t more data sharing. We need stronger privacy protections, with real teeth for gross failures like this. #auspol

The addition of a card-number is no solution to driver licence data being compromised. Retention of authentication-data in databases creates an unmanageable vulnerability. Our #privacy protections depend on data deletion. #auspol privacy.org.au/2022/11/03/car…

Our privacy law is dangerously out of date. The Gov't has proposed modernising our law to protect Australians' privacy while safeguarding journalism & business. Over the last 20 years vested interests have repeatedly blocked sensible privacy reform. We can't allow that this time
