Under HR 9495, nonprofit newsrooms — many of them unionized, like ProPublica Guild — could be targeted by future administrations looking to retaliate against their critics. This bill would have a chilling effect on the free press, and we urge Rep. Frank Pallone to vote NO.

When Gannett cut AP in March, our corporate execs said the savings (along with cutting LexisNexis access) would be reinvested in its newsrooms. At the time, the APP-MCJ Guild 🌊 was down 4 reporters (investigative, features, sports) and a videographer since Oct. 2021.

READY TO WALK: Our members at six Gannett newspapers in New York and New Jersey have had enough and voted by 95% to walk off the job. They are fed up with Gannett disregard for labor law and refusal to agree to a fair contract after three long years of bargaining.

We did it. Last week, APP-MCJ Guild 🌊 members voted 94% in a strike vote. 24 hours later, we reached a handshake deal on a contract (and Hudson Valley News Guild the day after). Strikes work.

Both Hudson Valley News Guild and APP-MCJ Guild 🌊 have ratified their contracts! Hudson Valley News Guild did so unanimously with 97% turnout and 97% of APP-MCJ Guild 🌊 members who voted, voted to approve. Congrats to them!

Solidarity forever with The Record Guild. Nearly a quarter of their members earn less than $40,000 annually — a poverty-level wage anywhere in New Jersey, let alone North Jersey. Gannett management should be ashamed that it’s come to this.
