💓2022 was a fruitful year for finding trombidiform mites - some highlights: 1 Allothrombium "Sumo" mite w/ attached larval erythraeids! 2 Microtrombidiid traversing the forest floor 3 intensely red & velvety Trombidium(?) species 4 super cute orange Trombiculid (adult chigger!)

I’m writing a poem atm about money spiders’ ballooning flight 🕷 Today was spent with thousands of them taking off (+ in my hair & on my notebook). I’m v.grateful to Angela Chuang, Moonsung Cho, Andy Reynolds, Erica Morley & Daniel Robert for the research they’re doing & sharing

Several recent posts of Portia hunting remind me that I have seen this smart lady eating a poor Herennia in the forest of Southern Taiwan.

When we spot sea spiders, they are usually on the seafloor or crawling on some organism. So it was a delightful surprise to see this sea spider swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. This sea spider belongs to the order Pantopoda, which literally means “all legs." Sounds about right...

Curious about spider names? In Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society we classified >48'000 spider etymologies and modeled spatio-temporal patterns in naming practices: doi.org/10.1093/zoolin… -as a bonus, it includes a lot of spider trivia! /w Julien Pétillon Diego Fontaneto Stephen Heard et al.

"Dr. Scott and Dr. McCann say this new discovery underlines the importance of taking time to be curious and simply watch..." love it, great work, interesting story. Couldn't ask for more.

Spider spotlight - This is a rainforest wishbone spider (𝑁𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑎) from eastern Australia. They are gorgeous, if I do say so myself. Their burrow has a main entrance (left) and a second escape chute that's concealed with a thin soil layer (right, soil layer broken)...

Triaenobunus pilosus! The first time I saw one I thought it dead and covered in fungus. It wasn’t and it isn’t. This is how it is and it is my favorite species of Triaenonychidae #Opiliones. I’ve only ever seen two, this is the second. Endemic to Tasmania.
