From all accounts, the academic job market is challenging. Therefore, to give my candidacy an edge, I will be prepared to perform Rabindra Sangeet (Rabindranath Tagore's songs) at the end of every job talk.

Doctoral Fellow Arko Dasgupta recently published an article for the India International Centre Quarterly Journal! Titled “Kala Bagai: An Early Indian Woman in America," it's an exploration, through the story of Bagai's life, of the complexities U.S. immigrants face.

My new book, SPEAKING FOR NATURE: THE ORIGINS OF INDIAN ENVIRONMENTALISM, is out next month. It profiles ten thinkers who, in different but equally compelling ways, anticipated the environmental challenges that face India and the world today. More details below.

I have received a number of requests for a concise history of reparations internationally and in the United States. I believe pp.3-10 here will provide a useful entry point: researchgate.net/publication/38…

Came across quite a few of these "Indian Astrologer" ads in the Negro World, newspaper of Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association. For a while, it also had an Indian editor, Hucheshwar Mudgal, and chief correspondent, P Premdas.

It is Fritz Lang's birthday. His best-known film Metropolis was based on a novel by Thea von Harbou, who also wrote its screenplay. Lang and von Harbou were married for a number of years until von Harbou's affair with the enigmatic Ayi Tendulkar. Photo: museumofgoa

I was asked by The Indian Express to contribute a piece on Rabindranath Tagore for one of their recently launched columns, in honour of his birth anniversary. Edits and title are theirs. Sharing it here: indianexpress.com/article/upsc-c…

After getting my fish from the supermarket's meat & seafood counter, I pointed at it, looked at the person behind me, and said: "Sir SALMON Rushdie." The silence that followed was so thick you could've filleted it.

Weekend binge: Deli Boys. Brian George (Babu Bhatt from Seinfeld) is in it, too--he's really cornering the market on "Pakistani" TV characters.

Back in India next week after 2 years, PhD in hand. Grateful to my committee: Nico Slate, Joe Trotter, and Faisal Devji. After spending the past year as a doctoral fellow at Duke, and pending visa formalities, I'll be returning to CMU for a postdoc. (Photo from Jodhpur, pre-PhD)

Pretty disappointing experience United Airlines. Missed my connection to Delhi owing to air traffic delays & had to put myself up in a hotel in NJ. The agent at Newark simply pointed at the QR Codes on pillars when approached! I’m now flying via Europe instead of my original direct.
